Our second event: Just
as much fun!
Hickory Hill Farm, Standish, Maine, February 21, 1999

We had a perfect spring skiing day in Maine, with a deep blue sky and a light
wind for our second event. We met at Elaine and David Bradbury's lovely farm in
Standish, Maine, which has acres of woods with groomed trails. 18 humans and 22
dogs (16 of them Chinooks) arrived to enjoy the day. We had five sleds and the
pool of dogs turned into a variety of teams as the pool of humans turned into
drivers and riders. Nearly everyone had some time on the sleds in some way. And
nearly all the dogs (except the Westies) took a turn in harness.

In the morning we took two runs through
the woods, each time allowing someone else to try their hand at sledding.
Following the two runs, we strolled through the woods in a swirling sea of
Chinooks. As we wound through the trails, different turns allowed for
conversation with yet another person. The loop brought us back to the farm and
we settled the dogs while we all went in by the fire to stop for lunch.
While enjoying the delicious offerings of the potluck we began our first
fundraiser, a silent auction of items everyone had contributed. People went home
with lovely framed photos of Chinook, baskets, stuffed animals, a llama hike, a
copy of Little America, and various other items. Human and dog door prizes
topped off the day. After the fun, there was time for one more run. So, off went
the teams again. The dogs worked hard and earned every biscuit that they got.
